Hyperpigmentation

Dark Spots Getting You Down?

Hyperpigmentation is a prevalent and mostly harmless condition that causes some parts of the skin to appear darker than others. It can occur via the aging process, environmental factors – such as sun exposure – or a combination of both.

Fortunately, Inspired Med Spa offers a range of non-invasive hyperpigmentation treatment options to help you feel more confident. Our options help reduce the appearance of mild to severe hyperpigmentation on the face and other areas of the body.

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a condition that occurs due to an excess accumulation of melanin in the skin – a natural compound that makes it appear darker. Ideally, the body should distribute melanin evenly across its surface. However, age, genetic and environmental factors can prevent it from doing so.

People of any skin color can experience hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmented areas can appear anywhere on the body at random and following specific events. Pregnancy, for instance, can lead to hormonal changes that make hyperpigmentation more likely. It is also inherent in people with freckles.

What Treatment Options are Available for Hyperpigmentation?

There are several treatment options available for hyperpigmentation, including facials, chemical peels, IPL, and microdermabrasion. Inspired Med Spa provides state-of-the-art equipment and has significant expertise in all these therapies.

Facials usually use creams that contain the active ingredient hydroquinone. This bleaching chemical helps to lighten affected areas of skin, helping to counteract the effects of high concentrations of melanin.

Chemical Peels involve applying a chemical solution to areas affected by hyperpigmentation to remove dead skin cells. By eliminating the top layer of skin, this treatment encourages new growth underneath, incentivizing cells to rejuvenate naturally.

Laser therapies have a similar effect to chemical peels, except they’re more targeted. Here therapists zap problem areas of the skin with targeted pulses of light, penetrating deep into the skin’s lower layers. Again, the treatment stimulates cells’ in-built capacity for rejuvenation, removing the appearance of dark areas. Q-switched lasers remove pigmentation without scarring.

Microdermabrasion is a type of hyperpigmentation treatment that uses fine crystals and a vacuum to eliminate dead skin cells from the surface of the face. Therapists use a unique device to target surface cells in pigmented areas.

What Results Will I See?

Clients who use hyperpigmentation treatment typically see a range of beneficial results. These include:

  • Reduced appearance of dark spots on the face, neck, chest, arms or legs
  • Smoother-looking skin that appears fresh and vibrant
  • Better complexion and more even skin tone

How long it takes for results to appear depends on the treatment you choose. Facials offer fast improvement, whereas it may take longer to heal after a chemical peel.

Is There Any Downtime From Hyperpigmentation Treatment?

Most hyperpigmentation treatments don’t involve any downtime. You can continue your regular daily activities immediately after facials, IPL, and microdermabrasion. Chemical peels require between seven and fourteen days for recovery, depending on the depth of the peel.
